The journey of FRP began with the invention of Bakelite, the first synthetic plastic, by Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland in 1905. Originally seeking an alternative to shellac, Baekeland experimented with natural resins and fibers. His breakthrough came when he controlled the pressure and temperature applied to phenol and formaldehyde, creating a tough, moldable material.
